Lexus has always sold the ES as the comfortable choice in the luxury sedan segment. The fully redesigned eighth-generation 2026 ES keeps that brief and adds something new: a pair of all-electric variants that mark the first time a battery-electric powertrain has appeared under the ES nameplate.
That matters in context. Lexus sold 39,926 ES sedans in 2025, enough to outsell the BMW 3 Series in the U.S. by a meaningful margin. Sedans are a shrinking slice of Lexus’s overall volume, but the ES punches well above its weight within that slice. Lexus executives are betting the electric variants will account for half of new ES sales, which means the BEV launch isn’t a compliance exercise. It’s the center of the lineup’s strategy.
The platform underneath makes that possible. Both hybrid and all-electric models share a revised TNGA-K architecture, a first for the ES. Rigidity is improved at the front, floor, and rear, tightening body control without compromising the ride quality the ES has built its reputation on. The platform’s flexibility to accept either powertrain type is new for the nameplate and gives Lexus room to shift the mix as demand develops.
On the hybrid side, the ES 350h gains something it has never had before: available all-wheel drive. Lexus’s sixth-generation 2.5-liter hybrid system now adds a rear eAxle, which merges the power control unit and transaxle into a compact unit driving the rear wheels independently. It’s a meaningful upgrade for buyers in snow-belt markets who have had to look elsewhere in the Lexus lineup for winter AWD capability in a sedan.
The BEV lineup runs two models. The ES 350e in front-wheel drive carries an EPA-estimated range of 307 miles on standard 19-inch wheels. The ES 500e in all-wheel drive rates at 276 miles. Both use a NACS charging port and support DC fast charging; under ideal conditions, a 10-to-80-percent charge takes approximately 30 minutes. Standard Level 1 and Level 2 AC charging are handled by an 11-kW onboard charger.
The ES also grew significantly. Overall length is up 6.5 inches, and the wheelbase stretches 3.1 inches. That math shows up most in rear-seat room, which receives the biggest benefit from the longer floor. Front seatback thickness has been reduced and the window frames lowered, expanding glass area and the sense of openness without requiring a panoramic roof.
