Toyota Recalls 16,200 Model Year 2026 bZ and Lexus RZ EVs for Battery ECU Fault That Can Cut Power at Highway Speed

Toyota is recalling approximately 16,200 model year 2026 bZ and Lexus RZ electric vehicles for a battery ECU error that can shut down the electric drive system while driving, potentially at highway speed.

The electronic control unit managing the battery that supplies electricity to the drivetrain can experience an error that causes the electric drive system to cut power entirely. Power steering and power-assisted braking continue to operate, but the loss of motive power at higher speeds increases crash risk.

Dealers will update the battery ECU software free of charge. Owner notifications begin in mid-August 2026.

This is the latest in a string of recalls for the platform. The bZ4X, which Toyota renamed to bZ in May 2025 for the model year 2026 refresh, has faced multiple safety campaigns since its launch. The most severe came in 2022, when Toyota recalled early bZ4X units for wheels that could detach from the vehicle. The company offered buybacks rather than repairs.

2026 Lexus RZ (Lexus)

More recently, 2023 through 2025 bZ4X, Lexus RZ, and Subaru Solterra models were recalled for an HVAC control ECU issue. The ECU can enter a failsafe mode after certain compressor faults, suspending heating and preventing the windshield from defrosting properly in low temperatures. A backup camera software recall spans the Lexus RZ across 2022 through 2026 model years.

Toyota sold 10,029 units of the bZ crossover in the first quarter of 2026, a 79% gain over the same period last year. The model year 2026 refresh that brought the nameplate change from bZ4X to bZ also delivered updated styling, revised interior materials, and tweaks to the battery thermal management system.
