Cold weather has been the standing argument against buying an electric vehicle, and the Hyundai IONIQ 9 just collected a formal rebuttal from the people best positioned to issue one.
The New England Motor Press Association handed the IONIQ 9 its Best Winter EV of New England award for 2026, following a winter evaluation program that puts more than 100 model-year vehicles through the region’s genuinely punishing cold-climate conditions. NEMPA members judge on cold-specific features, charging behavior, range retention, and the kind of dynamic confidence that keeps a driver relaxed when the roads go bad. The IONIQ 9 beat the field on charging speed, driving range, and comfort.
The spec sheet explains part of that verdict. Every IONIQ 9 runs a 110.3-kWh long-range battery, and the RWD S trim carries an EPA-estimated 335 miles of range. The AWD SE and AWD SEL trims are rated at 320 miles, and the AWD Performance Limited and AWD Performance Calligraphy Design trims come in at 311 miles. Three motor configurations are available across the lineup. On a 350-kW, 800V DC ultra-fast charger, the IONIQ 9 goes from 10% to 80% in approximately 24 minutes, which matters when winter temperatures already compress usable range and patience runs thin at public chargers.
The winter-specific hardware is where Hyundai made deliberate choices. A heat pump is standard across the lineup, not a paid option. Heat pumps recover thermal energy from the ambient air and the powertrain rather than drawing heavily on the battery the way resistive heaters do, which helps preserve range in exactly the conditions where range anxiety is highest. The dedicated Snow drive mode adjusts throttle mapping and torque delivery for slippery surfaces. Heated side mirrors come standard, and heated seats are available in all three rows, not just the front two. That last detail matters in a family vehicle where rear occupants tend to get the cold-weather afterthought treatment.
V2L capability is also included, giving owners the ability to power external devices from the battery, a feature that earns its place in a market where winter storms and grid outages occasionally coincide.

Hyundai is not new to this podium. NEMPA named the IONIQ 5 N the Official Winter EV of New England in 2025, so the brand has built consecutive years of recognition from a testing organization whose members actually drive the vehicles in regional winter conditions rather than in climate-controlled evaluation rooms.
The competitive context matters here. The three-row electric SUV segment is more crowded than it was a year ago, with the Kia EV9 occupying adjacent territory and the 2027 Toyota Highlander EV now entering the conversation with a familiar nameplate and competitive specs. Hyundai sold 5,189 IONIQ 9s last year against 123,929 Palisades, which shows how much runway remains for three-row EVs relative to their combustion equivalents. An award that speaks directly to range-anxiety and cold-weather concerns is worth more to a brand in this segment than a design trophy, because weather performance is the specific barrier keeping buyers in the Palisade lane.
The IONIQ 9’s lounge-configured cabin, with flexible seating across all three rows, rounds out the package NEMPA evaluated. But the award language focused on charging speed, range, and comfort in that order, which tracks with what buyers in Boston, Providence, and Burlington are actually asking about when they walk into a showroom in January.
