The compact SUV segment has never been more crowded, which makes winning a best-in-class award there more meaningful than it used to be. The 2026 Volkswagen Tiguan SEL R-Line Turbo took home the Best Compact SUV honor from the inaugural Best of the Year Awards on October 14, recognized for delivering near-luxury equipment at a price below the luxury-badge threshold.
The award program’s editorial team cited the SEL R-Line Turbo’s upgraded engine, cabin quality, standard all-wheel drive, and driver assistance suite as the primary drivers of its selection. Winners were chosen through an evaluation process involving independent subject-matter experts, consumer testers, and analysts assessing performance, usability, construction, user experience, and overall execution. The award team’s summary captured the buyer profile the Tiguan is targeting: someone who wants upscale materials and comfort in something practical, without paying luxury-badge prices.
The SEL R-Line Turbo is powered by a 268-hp 2.0-liter EA888 evo5 engine, paired with standard 4Motion all-wheel drive. Available front seats add heating, ventilation, and massage functions. IQ.DRIVE driver assistance technology comes standard. The 2026 Tiguan starts at $30,805 including a $1,475 destination charge, while the SEL R-Line Turbo opens at $43,085 before destination. Volkswagen has not announced what, if any, option packages exist above that base SEL R-Line Turbo figure.

The Tiguan’s third generation arrived for 2025 with a more refined driving experience, enhanced connectivity, and upgraded interior materials. The SUV has also earned Consumer Reports Recommended status for 2026 and posted a perfect score in Cars.com’s car seat testing, where it won the Best Cars for Car Seats award outright. That cluster of third-party recognition over a single model year is unusual for a non-luxury nameplate.
The recognition matters in segment context. When the second-generation Tiguan arrived in 2018 with a longer, seven-seat body, US deliveries jumped to 103,022 units, crossing 100,000 for four consecutive years before semiconductor shortages compressed volume to 71,085 in 2022. Volkswagen calls the Tiguan its best-selling vehicle in the United States, and the third-generation refresh is aimed at holding that position as the compact crossover segment continues to pull buyers away from mid-size sedans.

The Best of the Year Awards is a new entrant among automotive award programs. As an inaugural edition, it does not yet carry the track record of longer-running programs, but its stated methodology, independent expert panels and structured consumer testing across a competitive set, follows the standard framework used by the more established awards the Tiguan has already collected this year.
Three best-in-segment or best-in-class awards in a single calendar year is a credible run for a vehicle that was fully redesigned only one model year ago. The Tiguan’s position as Volkswagen’s US volume anchor means the brand needs the SEL R-Line Turbo to pull premium transaction prices while the lower trims hold the segment’s entry-level floor. So far in 2026, third-party evaluators have agreed with that positioning.
