Volkswagen of America’s overall volume fell 10.9% in Q3 2026 compared to the same period last year, a reversal from the 24.9% year-over-year gain VW posted in Q2 that had briefly erased a rocky start to the year.
The headline number masks a split story inside the lineup. The Tiguan gained 27.4% year over year in the quarter, and the Jetta climbed 24.9%, both moving against the brand’s own declining aggregate. The Tiguan’s Consumer Reports Recommended status for 2026 has not hurt its momentum. The rest of the lineup absorbed most of the Q3 damage, though Volkswagen of America has not broken out model-by-model unit counts beyond the two bright spots.

The trajectory heading into Q3 had been fragile. VW entered the second half of 2026 with 162,961 vehicles sold in the first six months, a 2.3% gain over the prior year’s H1 figure, but that positive half-year number was stitched together from a 16.1% Q1 collapse and the subsequent Q2 rebound. A 10.9% Q3 decline erodes that cushion. Volkswagen Group’s North America operation was already running 9.8% behind recent international benchmarks, so the Q3 result fits a pattern rather than breaking from one.
The ID.4’s trajectory is the most consequential subplot. Sales of the electric crossover fell to 338 units in Q1 2026 after the elimination of federal tax credits, a 95.6% plunge from its prior-year pace. Volkswagen of America has not shared Q3 figures for the ID.4 specifically, so it remains unclear whether any recovery materialized over the summer selling season. The ID.Buzz had been a notable outperformer in Q2, up 121.5% year over year, but again, Q3 model-level detail beyond Tiguan and Jetta is absent.

What the quarter confirms is that VW’s recovery story from early 2026 was real but narrow. Two models are genuinely gaining share. The rest of the brand, and particularly the EV portion of the lineup, is still finding its footing in a market where federal purchase incentives no longer backstop the transaction.
