Volkswagen‘s Chattanooga plant is building the all-new 2027 Atlas, and the three-row SUV is set to reach dealerships next month. The automaker marked the assembly start today with a ceremony that brought local government officials, community partners, and VW leadership to the Tennessee facility to sign a commemorative Atlas hood.
The timing matters for Volkswagen’s North American business. The Atlas accounted for 71,044 US sales in 2025, making it the brand’s second-highest-volume model and close to a third of VW’s total American volume. Any delay in the second-generation model’s production ramp would leave a visible gap on dealer lots. The Kia Telluride, Hyundai Palisade, and Honda Pilot aren’t standing still.
The 2027 Atlas carries a revised 2.0-liter EA888 turbocharged four-cylinder producing 282 hp, up from 269 hp in the outgoing model and the highest output the Atlas nameplate has ever carried. Volkswagen says efficiency also improves over the previous generation, though specific fuel economy figures haven’t been shared yet. Pricing for the second-generation Atlas starts at $41,610, up from the 2026 model’s $39,310 base.
The interior received a thorough overhaul alongside the powertrain upgrade. Real wood trim, synthetic leather, and multicolor ambient lighting are now standard equipment, part of a deliberate push into more premium territory. The Atlas Cross Sport, the two-row coupe-roofed sibling, shares the same 282-hp engine and redesigned interior and began its own assembly run this summer.
Chattanooga has built more than one million Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport units since the first one left the line in December 2016. That milestone, combined with more than 4,000 employees at the facility today, reflects the scale of Volkswagen’s manufacturing commitment in Tennessee. The original Atlas launch prompted a $900 million plant expansion; the second-generation model represents the next chapter of that investment rather than its conclusion.
With 282 hp on tap and a genuinely upgraded cabin, the 2027 Atlas arrives with more ammunition than its predecessor. Whether it closes the perception gap with the Telluride is a question buyers will start answering next month.
