The next-generation Jeep® Compass (J4U) is rumored to be gearing up for its official debut by the end of the year, as reported by British car magazine AutoExpress. Development is said to be in its advanced stages, and production is expected to commence in mid-2025 in Europe, followed by North America later in the year.
So, what can we expect from the new Compass? Prepare for a major overhaul. First and foremost, it will be built on a cutting-edge platform known as STLA Medium, bidding farewell to the outdated Small Wide 4×4 platform. This modern architecture, utilized in vehicles like the Peugeot 5008 and Opel Grandland, promises many enhancements, from superior technology integration to heightened energy efficiency. Furthermore, it will accommodate traditional, hybrid, and electric powertrains, ensuring unparalleled versatility.
Thanks to this new platform, the upcoming Compass is slated to be slightly larger than its predecessor. The versatility of the STLA Medium platform allows it to accommodate a third-row if needed. While this third-row isn’t designed for large adults, it should provide ample space for most families with small children and early teenagers. It’s worth noting that Jeep has been offering a three-row variant of the Compass, known as the Commander, in markets like Brazil and India for several years. Therefore, including a possible third-row option in the new Compass seems logical.
The J4U is expected to be powered by all-electric, mild-hybrid, and internal combustion engine (ICE) options. For those looking for battery-electric power, the Compass J4U will use a dual e-motor setup boasting power output ranging from 160 kW (215 horsepower) to 285 kW (382 horsepower), a 400-volt electrical architecture, and a range of up to 435 miles (700 km).
With European emissions getting stricter, the J4U should also offer a front-wheel drive (FWD) mild-hybrid powertrain under its e-HYBRID lineup. This powertrain should allow the Compass to run on just electric power in busy urban areas at low speed with sacrificing limited range.
For North America, we can expect the new Compass to get a new turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine with direct injection and flexibility for hybrid-electric (HEV) applications. The new engine was already highlighted during an investment announcement in August 2022 for the Dundee Engine Plant in Michigan.
Regarding design, anticipate a bolder and more assertive appearance for the new Compass. AutoExpress hints at squared-off lines exuding confidence and strength. A modern and tech-laden cabin awaits, complete with integrated screens, premium finishes, and advanced service features.
The new Compass J4U will be produced for the European market at the Melfi Assembly Plant in Italy and for the North American marketplace at the Brampton Assembly Plant in Ontario. An additional production site in Brazil is also expected later.
