Polestar has a concept to show, two production models to sell you on, and exactly zero powertrain specs to share. The Formula 2030, confirmed September 7 in Gothenburg, functions as a rolling design brief rather than a performance statement: its purpose is to preview the visual direction of the next Polestar 2, planned for a 2027 launch, and the Polestar 7 compact SUV, due in 2028. No horsepower figure, no range estimate, no price. Not yet.
What the concept does carry is a design argument. Head of Design Philipp Römers framed it plainly: Polestar’s existing design language is strong enough that a wholesale reinvention would be a mistake, so the Formula 2030 pushes the brand’s established Scandinavian form language into its next chapter rather than abandoning it. The Dual Blade headlight signature, already the brand’s most recognizable exterior element, carries forward. Römers describes the result as a “bold evolution,” a phrase that tends to mean the people writing the checks preferred familiarity to risk. Whether the execution earns that description is a question for the global debut, scheduled alongside a Polestar 4 SUV media drive later in 2026.
The concept’s first audience will not be the press. Polestar is showing the Formula 2030 to investors, retailers, and select customers at The Cube, its Gothenburg headquarters, as part of a broader commercial strategy presentation the brand calls its 2030 plan. That sequencing matters: this is a brand confidence play aimed at the people who fund and retail Polestar’s cars, coming at a moment when the company needs both groups fully committed.
The context for that pitch is more encouraging than it was a year ago. Polestar delivered approximately 60,119 vehicles globally in 2025, a 34 percent increase over 2024. The Polestar 2 competes directly with the Tesla Model 3 in the compact electric sedan segment, and that segment remains one of the most contested in the EV market. A successor arriving in 2027 with a refreshed design language needs to make a strong visual case against a Model 3 that has already gone through its own significant redesign.
Beyond the Polestar 2, the Formula 2030 concept also sets the table for the Polestar 7, a compact SUV earmarked for 2028 and planned for European production, a first for the brand, which currently builds its cars in North America and Asia. The Polestar 6 roadster is also in the pipeline, though no timeline has been attached to it publicly.
Power output, battery architecture, range, and pricing for either the Polestar 2 successor or the Polestar 7 remain undisclosed. The Formula 2030 concept is a promise about what those cars will look like. Whether the engineering underneath makes good on that promise is a conversation for a later date, and almost certainly a later press event.
