Three out of every four Polestar vehicles sold is a Polestar 4. That figure explains, as clearly as any boardroom slide could, why the Swedish brand built an SUV sibling to its coupé variant rather than waiting for something entirely new. The Polestar 4 SUV, now in production at Busan, South Korea, takes the coupé’s platform and powertrain menu and adds a more upright rear end, a proper tailgate, and a cargo bay that expands to 1,665 liters with the second row folded. First deliveries are planned for the fourth quarter of 2026.

The exterior rework is focused and purposeful. Polestar kept the dual blade headlights and illuminated logo up front, then redesigned everything aft of the B-pillar: a straighter roofline, a more upright tailgate, and full-length roof rails rated for a 100 kg dynamic load. Eight exterior colours are available, including two new additions, Aurora (a bright silver-green) and Ozone Matte (a bright silver-purple in matte clear-coat). Inside, second-row passengers gain an extra 2.5 centimetres of headroom over the coupé, and the panoramic glass roof now stretches all the way to the tailgate. Buyers who want more control over light can option the electrochromic glass roof, unique to the SUV, which uses an electrically dimmable laminated glass layer controllable through three settings via the centre display. The digital rear-view mirror from the coupé remains available as an option, though the SUV now ships with a conventional mirror as standard and a rear window to go with it.

Powertrain options split cleanly between two buyers. The Rear motor variant makes 200 kW (272 hp) and 343 Nm of torque, covers 0-100 km/h in 7.3 seconds, and posts up to 630 km of WLTP range. The Dual motor all-wheel drive version produces 400 kW (544 hp) and 686 Nm, hits 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds, and carries a WLTP range figure of up to 600 km. Both share the same 100 kWh battery and the same charging ceiling: up to 200 kW DC and up to 22 kW AC in markets where the grid supports it. For buyers outside the UK, Ireland, Korea, and Canada, AC charging tops out at 11 kW.

Polestar has also added Vehicle-to-Load capability across the Polestar 4 range via a future software update, using the high-voltage battery to supply up to 3.3 kW of AC power (16A, single-phase, 230V) through a certified adapter sold separately. The related Camping mode, also arriving via software update, lets the parked SUV function as a climate-controlled space with access to both front and rear displays, ambient lighting, V2L power, USB-C connectivity, and the 12V outlet. It is the kind of feature that sounds marginal until the moment you need it.

Chassis tuning mirrors the recently updated Polestar 4 coupé, prioritising comfort on long runs while preserving the steering response Polestar’s dynamics team considers non-negotiable. Buyers after sharper dynamics can add the Performance pack, which brings recalibrated ZF active dampers, Brembo high-performance brakes with calipers finished in Swedish gold, and new 22-inch wheels wrapped in Pirelli P Zero tires. The pack also makes the visual distinction between trim levels explicit inside the cabin: Rear motor cars run an all-black seatbelt and rotary knob, Dual motor adds a gold stripe to both, and Performance pack cars go full Swedish gold on those details.

The technology story centres on Google Gemini, which replaces the traditional command-based voice assistant with a conversational AI that supports multi-turn dialogue and context-aware responses. Gemini Live extends that to hands-free brainstorming, trip planning, and real-time translation. It is rolling out across 22 countries in 16 languages and is now the standard in-car voice interface across Polestar’s model range. The infotainment interface itself gains three additional widget shortcuts on the main display, bringing the total to nine. The optional Harman Kardon audio system runs 12 speakers through a 1,400-watt channel-hybrid amplifier tuned specifically for the SUV body.

Polestar has been vocal about its sustainability accounting, and the 4 SUV carries a cradle-to-gate carbon footprint of 21.1 tCO2e for the Dual motor variant and 20.2 tCO2e for the Rear motor, figures Polestar attributes to 100% renewable electricity in battery cell production, aluminium sourced partly from renewably powered smelters, and 23% recycled aluminium content in the build. Interior materials follow the same logic: standard bio-attributed MicroTech uses a backing made from 100% recycled PET, optional Tailored Knit upholstery is 89% recycled PET and 3D-knitted to reduce waste, and Bridge of Weir Nappa leather is chrome-free and fully traceable to its source farm.

Pricing is quoted in German base figures including VAT but excluding handover fees. The Rear motor starts at EUR 57,900, the Dual motor at EUR 65,900, and the Performance pack version from EUR 76,300. No US pricing has been disclosed. The segment the SUV enters, compact executive electrics, includes the Tesla Model Y, BMW iX3, and Mercedes EQB. Polestar’s global sales fell 15% to 44,900 units in 2024, and the 4 SUV is plainly the brand’s answer to that slide: more body style, same formula.

Polestar built its reputation on a coupé that the market received warmly enough to account for three-quarters of its volume. The SUV version is the logical next question: can that same formula sell harder when it comes with a proper tailgate and room for a family’s worth of gear? The fourth quarter will begin to answer it.
