Nearly one in three vehicles GM sells is a full-size pickup, which makes the cabin experience on the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado and 2027 GMC Sierra a bigger strategic decision than it would be for most brands. GM is betting that the answer to Ford F-150 dominance runs partly through the instrument panel. The new user interface it announced September 15 debuts on those two trucks before spreading across the broader GM portfolio.
The system is built on a single scalable architecture that spans electric, gas, and diesel powertrains, meaning the Silverado EV and its combustion siblings share the same software foundation. OTA updates feed into it continuously, so the version buyers get at delivery is explicitly not the final form.
On paper, the redesign targets a specific weakness. According to J.D. Power’s 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study, infotainment and connectivity rank as the least reliable category across the industry. GM’s approach here is to simplify the interaction layer rather than pile on features. The default home screen splits into a large interactive map on one side and a configurable panel on the other, where trailering metrics, fuel data, or media can occupy the second column without burying navigation. The new high-contrast displays promise deeper blacks and richer colors, which matters most in direct sunlight where most truck work happens.
The driver cluster is mode-aware, shifting its layout dynamically when the truck enters a trailering session, an off-road mode, or Super Cruise operation. The 3D driving visualization, available when Super Cruise is active, renders surrounding traffic, lane markings, and road objects in real time so the driver can see what the truck’s sensor suite is seeing. It’s a confidence-building feature for a system that still asks for genuine driver attention regardless of what the screen shows.
Hands-free trailering paired with Super Cruise returns, and the new interface is built around that capability rather than treating it as a supplement. Hooking up a trailer automatically triggers a dedicated trailering card on the center screen and a matching cluster view showing tow metrics and a visualization of how the truck and trailer track together. The Hitch View camera assists with hitching without a spotter. An underbody camera helps with terrain navigation. The feature that will actually matter to anyone who has ever spent ten minutes walking back and forth between the cab and the trailer: a phone-based trailer light check that tests brake lights, turn signals, reverse lights, and running lights without leaving the driver’s seat.

Android Auto and Apple CarPlay appear in a split-card format alongside native GM apps, rather than the full-screen takeover most systems default to. Trailering data, vehicle status, and a camera view can all share the screen while a phone’s navigation or audio app occupies its own card. Incoming calls no longer take over the display; instead, they arrive as a compact notification, with a call timer at the top of the screen after pickup. Tapping it expands to the full phone interface.
The passenger screen supports streaming from Disney+, YouTube, Hulu, Amazon Music, DIRECTV, AMC+, iHeartRadio, SiriusXM, Spotify, Tubi, TuneIn, ViX, and YouTube Kids. Polarized glass keeps that content invisible to the driver while the truck is moving. Google Gemini handles voice queries, with Google Maps and Google Play available for apps beyond the native suite. OnStar provides the connectivity backbone for the native truck-specific features.
GM has not announced pricing for the new UI package or confirmed which Silverado and Sierra trim levels will carry it at launch. Given that the 2027 Silverado lineup spans seven trims, the question of which buyers actually get the full system at which price points matters considerably. That detail is still outstanding.
The organizational backstory here is worth a sentence. GM put its digital experience work under design rather than software, led by Sebastian Bauer, who came up through Apple and Google. Whether that reporting structure produces a more coherent product is the kind of thing that shows in an owner’s second month with the truck, not in a press event. J.D. Power’s data says GM has work to do in this category; the new UI is the plan for doing it.
GM’s pickup business is its volume engine. If the interface earns its keep, it does so quietly, by not frustrating the people who already bought the truck for its engines, its tow ratings, and its ZR2 capability. The screen that gets out of the way is the screen that wins.
