The Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk, the most capable trim in the lineup, returns for 2027 after a one-year absence alongside the reintroduced Grand Cherokee Overland. Both arrive at dealers later this year with production at Stellantis’ Detroit Assembly Complex in Michigan. Pricing has not been disclosed.

The Trailhawk’s return is substantive. The 2027 model drops the 4xe plug-in hybrid powertrain Stellantis discontinued for 2026 and adopts the 2.0-liter turbocharged Hurricane 4 Turbo four-cylinder paired with an eight-speed automatic. The engine makes 324 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque, with peak torque at 3,000 rpm. Jeep claims the torque curve delivers faster response than previous gas-powered Trailhawk models, particularly off-road where the eight-speed’s torque converter improves low-speed crawling control.

The Hurricane 4 Turbo is the first high-volume application of Turbulent Jet Ignition, a combustion system that produces 162 hp per liter. That specific-output figure is segment-leading, though Jeep does not name a competitor.

The off-road hardware is where the Trailhawk earns its Trail Rated badge. Quadra-Trac II with a two-speed transfer case, Selec-Terrain traction control with Rock mode, Quadra-Lift air suspension with electronic semi-active damping, a rear electronic limited-slip differential, and 30.5-inch Goodyear Territory All-Terrain tires on 18-inch Granite Crystal wheels. Six high-strength steel skid plates protect the engine, transmission, transfer case, suspension components, and fuel tank. An integrated TrailCam off-road camera with dynamic tire path and rear camera washer is standard.

Ground clearance maxes out at 11.4 inches, which Jeep calls best-in-class. Approach, breakover, and departure angles are 36, 24.4, and 30.3 degrees, respectively. Jeep claims those angles are also best-in-class but does not specify the class. The Trail Rated badge certifies the Trailhawk has been tested on the Rubicon Trail and meets standards for traction, water fording, maneuverability, articulation, and ground clearance.

Maximum towing capacity is 6,200 pounds, which Jeep also calls best-in-class. A Trailer Tow Package is standard.

Exterior touches include a front fascia optimized for approach angles, red tow hooks, a matte black hood decal with red Trailhawk letailing, and dark neutral metallic accents. Inside, genuine Nappa leather seating in Global Black with red accent stitching distinguishes the Trailhawk from other Grand Cherokee trims. A 12.3-inch infotainment display is standard, as are the Off-Road Pages that display vehicle dynamics, gauges, pitch and roll, Selec-Terrain management, and suspension settings.

The Grand Cherokee Overland, absent since the prior generation, returns as the premium off-road model. The front end is more aggressive than the standard Grand Cherokee’s, with bright tow hooks, painted black lower bodywork, and 21-inch machine-faced wheels with mid-gloss Granite Crystal pockets. A body-color roof and Silver Silk exterior accents separate the Overland from the Trailhawk.

Inside, Nappa leather upholstery with pronounced Overland embossing on the front seat backs is standard. Front seats are heated and ventilated; rear seats are heated. An An-Teak Satin Chrome accent with a Liquid Chrome applique tracer runs through the cabin.

Off-road equipment includes Quadra-Trac II with a two-speed transfer case, Quadra-Lift air suspension, Hill-Descent Control, and semi-active damping. A 360-degree surround view camera with washer is standard. The Overland shares the Trailhawk’s Off-Road Pages.

The Trailhawk had been closely tied to the 4xe plug-in hybrid lineup, which Stellantis discontinued for 2026. The shift to the Hurricane 4 Turbo repositions the Trailhawk as a gas-only proposition in a segment that includes the Honda Passport, Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport, and Mazda CX-70 on the mainstream side and the Genesis GV80 in the luxury lane. In 2018, the Grand Cherokee sold over 240,000 units in the U.S., though sales have moderated since the current generation launched in 2021.

The competitive question is whether buyers who waited for the Trailhawk’s return will accept the four-cylinder in place of the 4xe’s combined powertrain or the prior generation’s V6 and V8 options. The Hurricane 4 Turbo’s torque curve and the Quadra-Lift suspension are the substantive answers Jeep is offering. Whether that’s enough depends on how the Trailhawk’s target buyer weighs specific output against displacement.
