2027 Kia Niro Goes Hybrid-Only With New Styling, Highway Drive Assist, and a Panoramic Display

Kia is narrowing its bets on the Niro. For 2027, the subcompact crossover drops its plug-in hybrid and EV variants entirely, concentrating the lineup on the conventional hybrid that has proven more popular with buyers than either specialty powertrain. The result is a cleaner product story: one powertrain, four trims (now five, counting a new S), and a round of updates substantial enough to make the Niro feel like it belongs in a segment that has grown significantly more competitive since the original launched as a 2017 model.

The 2025 Niro moved 31,182 units, respectable volume in a segment that now includes the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid and the Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid alongside stalwarts like the Toyota Prius and Honda Civic Hybrid. Both the Corolla Cross Hybrid and Crosstrek Hybrid offer standard all-wheel drive, something the Niro still doesn’t, so the 2027 update has to earn its place on attributes other than traction capability. Kia’s broader hybrid sales were up 115 percent in the first half of 2026, which provides a favorable tailwind, but competition at the segment level is real.

Pricing and on-sale timing haven’t been announced beyond a general summer window, so the value case won’t fully close until those numbers land.

Styling and Interior

The exterior changes are more than a bumper facelift. Up front, Kia fitted the Niro with its Star Map lighting signature, the same family of LED daytime running light graphics appearing across the brand’s refreshed lineup. The treatment emphasizes both horizontal and vertical lines to broaden the Niro’s visual stance, and a revised front grille and bumper clean up what was already a reasonably distinctive face. Two new exterior colors, Ivory Silver and Sunset Beige, round out the palette.

At the rear, redesigned 3D-style taillamps and a smoother bumper bring the back end in line with the revised front. Body-colored C-pillars replace the previous treatment, tightening the greenhouse and giving the profile a more cohesive appearance. Wheel arch cladding remains, a practical nod to the crossover character Kia has always leaned into with this vehicle.

Inside, the cabin gets its most substantive update. A new panoramic curved display pairs a standard 12.3-inch infotainment screen with an available 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, replacing the previous layout and giving the Niro’s cockpit a more contemporary feel. A 4-inch digital cluster comes standard on lower trims. A new two-tone steering wheel accompanies the screen changes. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard across all trims. The available Kia Connected Car Navigation Cockpit (ccNC) brings Quick Controls and over-the-air update capability. On certain trims, streaming access to Disney+, Netflix, and YouTube is available when the vehicle is parked, along with Kia’s AI assistant activated by a “Hey, Kia” wake phrase for voice control of climate, audio, and other functions.

Powertrain and Dynamics

Under the hood, nothing changes in terms of hardware. The 2027 Niro continues with its 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine paired to an electric motor, producing a combined 139 hp through a six-speed dual-clutch automatic. That figure has been the Niro hybrid’s number since this generation launched, and Kia isn’t touching it. The engineering attention for 2027 went elsewhere: suspension tuning, ride comfort, and cabin noise reduction. Kia describes the result as a smoother, more composed driving experience without sacrificing the responsive character the Niro has built its reputation on. The proof of that claim belongs in a drive review, but refined NVH and suspension calibration are achievable targets on a mid-cycle update, and Kia’s hybrid work in recent years has been credible.

Driver Assistance

The ADAS expansion is the most concrete upgrade in the package. The standard Forward Collision Avoidance system gains three new functions: Junction Turning, Cyclist, and Direct Oncoming. Standard Blind-Spot Collision Warning, Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Avoidance, Smart Cruise Control, and Lane Following Assist carry over, and the Lane Following Assist system now includes a Hands-on-Detection sensor that monitors steering wheel engagement.

Newly available for 2027 is Highway Drive Assist 2, which combines adaptive cruise with lane-centering assistance on certain federal highways. That puts the Niro in the same conversation as hybrid competitors offering similar hands-on highway assist systems, and it’s the most meaningful capability addition in this update. The SX Touring trim adds a 360-degree Surround View Monitor and a Blind-Spot View Monitor that places a live camera feed in the digital instrument cluster when a turn signal is activated.

Together, those additions move the Niro’s technology content meaningfully closer to what buyers increasingly expect in the segment, even if they stop short of the true hands-free systems appearing on some non-hybrid competitors at higher price points.

Going hybrid-only is a commitment to the Niro’s strongest suit rather than an admission that the EV and PHEV variants failed. Whether the no-AWD limitation costs Kia buyers in snowbelt markets is the question the summer pricing reveal will start to answer.
