BMW Group, IONNA, and Alpitronic pulled the curtain back on 460 kW DC charging for the new iX5 60 xDrive at an international media event in Southern California — a number that demands context before the enthusiasm kicks in.

The demonstration used Alpitronic hardware and IONNA network infrastructure to push 460 kW peak power into the iX5’s 144 kWh battery pack. At that rate, the SUV adds up to 170 miles of range in 10 minutes under EPA test procedures. A full 10-to-80 percent charge takes 22 minutes. Those figures come from BMW AG testing; both are estimates based on EPA methodology, not guaranteed in-field minimums. BMW has not shared what the real-world charging curve looks like as the battery warms or fills, which matters considerably at peak power claims this high.

There is also a disclosure worth noting before buyers start shopping charging networks: Alpitronic’s 460 kW hardware is not commercially available in the United States today. The Southern California event was a controlled technology demonstration, not a preview of existing infrastructure. IONNA operates the top-rated public charging network in J.D. Power’s inaugural EV charging study, scoring 807 out of 1,000 while surpassing 180 sites, but those sites run at different power levels than what Alpitronic wheeled out for this event.

The charging performance is native to BMW’s Gen6 eDrive platform, which uses 800-volt architecture and a completely new cylindrical cell format in place of the prismatic cells from Gen5. BMW says the cylindrical cells deliver 20 percent greater energy density than their predecessors. Gen6 debuted in the 2027 BMW iX3, which tops out at 400 kW DC charging in its M60 xDrive configuration. The iX5’s 460 kW ceiling is 60 kW higher, a function of the larger 144 kWh pack and the thermal envelope that comes with it.

Beyond raw peak speed, Gen6 brings bidirectional charging to the iX5: Vehicle-to-Load for portable devices, Vehicle-to-Home for power outages, and Vehicle-to-Vehicle for charging other EVs. That capability has been slow to land on vehicles in this segment at meaningful scale, and the iX5 represents BMW’s first implementation of the full suite.

IONNA’s role here is less about hardware and more about the network layer. The joint venture — backed by BMW, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Stellantis, and Toyota — positions itself around reliability and interoperability testing rather than peak power bragging rights. CEO Seth Cutler framed the collaboration as translating next-generation charging into an experience drivers can trust, which is a different value proposition than the 460 kW headline suggests. Building customer confidence in public charging matters more than peak session speeds if reliability lags behind capability.

Alpitronic CEO Philipp Senoner pointed to the company’s long-term partnership with BMW as what made the demonstration feasible, noting that vehicle and charging hardware have to advance in parallel to actually deliver the numbers either side promises. That alignment is straightforward in a controlled demonstration; making it routine across a public network is considerably harder.

The outgoing BMW iX, which starts at $88,095 and sold 8,894 units in the United States in 2024, operates on an earlier architecture with lower peak charging rates. The iX5’s Gen6 platform represents a meaningful step in charging speed for the nameplate. How quickly IONNA and Alpitronic can scale the hardware to match the vehicle’s ceiling will determine whether 460 kW stays a demonstration stat or becomes something iX5 owners can actually use.
