2027 BMW X5 Arrives With Five Powertrains, 435-Mile Electric iX5, and Prices From $69,800

BMW just made the X5 buying decision genuinely complicated. The fifth-generation X5, revealed at Plant Spartanburg in South Carolina, launches with five distinct drive systems: a 48V mild-hybrid inline-six, a plug-in hybrid, the first all-electric iX5, and, arriving later, a V8 M Performance variant and the BMW iX5 Hydrogen. Where the outgoing generation gave buyers a straightforward choice between gas and plug-in hybrid, the 2027 model asks them to think harder before signing anything.

BMW sold 76,246 X5s in the United States in 2025, making it one of the brand’s most important vehicles in this market. That number represents accumulated loyalty to a formula the X5 established in 1999: big, capable, genuinely enjoyable to drive. The new generation keeps that formula but adds enough technology to make it feel like a different kind of product entirely.

The iX5: The One That Changes the Conversation

The BMW iX5 60 xDrive is the headline. It runs sixth-generation BMW eDrive technology built around an 800V architecture and a completely new cell format: 120-millimeter-tall cylindrical cells, 46 millimeters in diameter, integrated directly into a cell-to-pack battery with 144 kWh of net usable energy. That cell design delivers roughly 20 percent more energy density than the previous generation’s prismatic cells, with individual cell energy up nearly 30 percent over the 95-millimeter cells used in the BMW iX3.

Two electric motors produce a combined 570 hp and 593 lb-ft of torque. The rear axle carries an electrically excited synchronous motor (EESM) developing 325 hp and 369 lb-ft; the front axle adds an asynchronous motor (ASM) rated at 245 hp and 225 lb-ft. The ASM can switch off entirely under light loads, letting the iX5 run on rear-axle drive alone for efficiency. BMW estimates 0-60 mph in 4.4 seconds with an electronically limited top speed of 130 mph, and projects up to 435 miles of range under EPA-style testing.

Charging is where the 800V architecture earns its keep. The iX5 supports up to 460 kW DC charging, taking the battery from 10 to 80 percent in 22 minutes and adding an estimated 170 miles in 10 minutes. AC charging runs at up to 15.4 kW standard. Standard equipment includes a NACS charging port. Bidirectional charging covers three modes: Vehicle-to-Load for portable devices, Vehicle-to-Home for outage backup, and Vehicle-to-Vehicle for charging other electric vehicles.

The iX5’s dynamics hardware goes beyond what the combustion models get. BMW fitted it with the Heart of Joy, an in-house-developed chassis control system that operates up to ten times faster than previous platforms. It manages the drive system, brakes, steering, charging, and recuperation simultaneously in milliseconds. On a vehicle carrying 570 hp and the mass that comes with a 144 kWh battery pack, the Heart of Joy is BMW’s answer to a specific problem: high-torque electric SUVs tend to feel computationally corrected rather than naturally balanced. Whether it actually resolves that sensation is a question for the first track test. Optionally, buyers can add Adaptive Chassis Control Professional with active roll stabilization, using a 48V electric motor at each axle.

The Combustion and Hybrid Cases

Buyers not ready for full electric have two refined options. The X5 40 and 40 xDrive run BMW’s updated 3.0-liter B58 inline-six with a new turbocharger boosting output to 394 hp and 428 lb-ft of torque, up 19 hp and 45 lb-ft over the previous unit. A 48V mild-hybrid starter-generator, integrated into the eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission, contributes up to 17 hp and 148 lb-ft of electric boost during acceleration and smooths Stop/Start operation. The B58 also uses the Miller combustion cycle with switchable exhaust-side rocker arms that cut drag torque on overrun by around two-thirds, recovering more energy through the 48V system. BMW estimates 0-60 in 5.1 seconds, or 4.8 with a 1-foot rollout, with a 155 mph top speed on proper equipment.

The X5 50e xDrive PHEV pairs that same six-cylinder, contributing 308 hp on its own, with a 194 hp synchronous electric motor integrated into the transmission housing. Combined system output is 483 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. The fifth-generation high-voltage battery carries 26.5 kWh of usable energy, enabling an estimated 44 miles of all-electric range, about 15 percent more than the previous generation, and a pure-electric top speed of 87 mph. Zero to 60 arrives in 4.6 seconds.

Interior and Technology

Inside, BMW has brought Neue Klasse technology into production on a current platform. BMW Panoramic iDrive centers on a 17.9-inch free-cut Central Display, with BMW Panoramic Vision spanning the full lower windshield width and a standard 3D Head-Up Display layered above it. The multifunction steering wheel operates on a shy-tech philosophy: driver assistance and infotainment controls only illuminate when their functions are available, reducing visual noise when they are not.

New for the X5 is the optional 14.6-inch BMW Passenger Screen, a full-HD display that sits beside the Central Display and gives the front-seat passenger access to streaming video, gaming, and video conferencing while moving. An interior camera monitors for driver distraction and darkens the screen automatically if it detects divided attention. BMW bundles four years of BMW Digital Premium data at no charge when the Passenger Screen is selected.

The voice assistant now integrates Amazon Alexa+ AI technology, enabling conversational interaction and access to external knowledge bases rather than command-based queries. The system runs on BMW Operating System X, built on Android Open-Source Project architecture with over-the-air update capability.

Material highlights include an optional BMW Individual Clear & Bold interior application pairing genuine slate on the center console with crystal glass gear selector, volume, and seat controls. The panoramic sunroof covers about 28 square feet across two glass elements. The standard 12-speaker, 280-watt HiFi System Professional can be upgraded to the Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound System, which runs up to 18 speakers at up to 775 watts with Dolby Atmos support. Adaptive suspension is standard across the lineup, with optional two-axle air suspension and Adaptive Chassis Control Professional available for the iX5 and the 50e xDrive.

Pricing and Timing

The X5 40 (rear-wheel drive) starts at $69,800; the X5 40 xDrive at $72,100; the X5 50e xDrive PHEV at $77,500; the iX5 60 xDrive at $79,800. Each carries a $1,450 destination charge. The X5 40 xDrive reaches dealers first, in October. The rear-drive X5 40, the 50e xDrive, and the iX5 60 xDrive follow in the first quarter of 2027. The V8 M Performance variant and, further out, the iX5 Hydrogen arrive later in 2027.

The Porsche Cayenne, Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class, Audi Q7, and Volvo XC90 all compete in the same space, but none of them currently offer a variant claiming 435 miles of electric range alongside a 483 hp plug-in hybrid and a 394 hp mild-hybrid six in the same generation lineup. BMW is betting that breadth is a competitive advantage. Given that the X5 already outsells most of those rivals in the U.S. by a comfortable margin, the bet may not need to pay off immediately, but it does need to hold together at the dealer level.

Five powertrains, one body, prices separated by $10,000 across the range. For the first time, the hardest part of buying an X5 might be the configuration screen.
