2027 Mazda CX-90 Absorbs the CX-70, Adds Two-Row Configs, and Prices From $39,700

Mazda is collapsing its two midsize crossovers into one. The 2027 CX-90, priced today from $39,700, officially absorbs the CX-70 by adding two-row variants to the lineup, a structural shift that simplifies what had become an increasingly crowded Mazda SUV shelf. Every model in the range also gets revised rear suspension bushings and a new crossmember aimed at smoother ride quality over rough pavement, while PHEV variants gain external insulation on the electric drive motor for quieter low-speed operation.

The CX-90 posted 55,156 sales in 2025, essentially flat against the 54,676 units it moved in its first full year on sale in 2024, making it Mazda’s anchor in the three-row segment. Folding the CX-70’s two-row buyers into the CX-90 family gives Mazda a single nameplate to defend rather than two overlapping ones, and it gives shoppers a cleaner choice: same platform, same powertrains, pick your row count.

Powertrains

Three engines cover the lineup. The base e-Skyactiv G 3.3 Turbo inline-six produces 280 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque on regular 87-octane fuel and comes paired with a 48V M-Hybrid Boost mild-hybrid system. Step to the 3.3 Turbo S and output climbs to 340 hp and 369 lb-ft on the recommended 91-octane premium, or 319 hp on regular. Turbo S models also get Mi-Drive with Sport, Off-Road, and Towing modes, with the tow rating reaching 5,000 lbs. when fitted with Mazda Genuine Towing Accessories. All 3.3 Turbo variants run an eight-speed automatic with standard i-Activ AWD.

The PHEV powertrain pairs a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder with an electric motor and a 17.8-kWh battery for 323 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque on 91-octane. All-electric range is rated at up to 27 miles, with EV mode capable of sustaining freeway-speed cruising on battery alone. PHEV models include Mi-Drive with Sport, Off-Road, and EV modes.

Two-Row Variants and Trim Structure

The two-row option lands on two trims only: the CX-90 3.3 Turbo Premium Sport and the CX-90 3.3 Turbo S Premium Sport. Both gain one-touch auto-down second-row seats for improved cargo access. Two exclusive exterior colors, Melting Copper Metallic and Zircon Sand Metallic, are available only on these two-row models. Navy Blue Mica and Aero Gray Metallic join the broader palette for all 2027 CX-90s, with all premium paint options carrying a $595 charge.

The trim ladder runs ten configurations. The 3.3 Turbo Select opens at $39,700 with 19-inch silver wheels, leatherette seating, a 10.25-inch infotainment display, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, three-zone climate control, and the full i-Activsense safety suite including Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Stop & Go and Blind Spot Monitoring. All 3.3 Turbo models seat eight via standard third-row bench seating.

The 3.3 Turbo Preferred steps to $43,850, adding 21-inch silver wheels, ventilated front seats, heated second-row seats, a 12.3-inch wireless-capable infotainment display, wireless phone charging, and roof rails newly standard for 2027. The 3.3 Turbo Premium Sport starts at $46,880 in two-row form and $48,080 in three-row, with the blackout exterior treatment, piano black trim throughout, and Alexa Built-In now standard for the model year. Buyers can configure it with eight-passenger bench seating, seven-passenger captain’s chairs, or the new two-row layout.

The 3.3 Turbo Premium Plus at $50,670 introduces Signature adaptive headlights with Adaptive Front-lighting System, Nappa leather in black or white, a 360-degree view monitor with trailer hitch view, and Mazda Online Navigation with over-the-air updates, the latter newly standard on this trim for 2027. The Turbo S Premium Sport arrives at $53,540 for the two-row and $54,740 for the three-row, adding the Driver Personalization System, Bose 12-speaker audio, panoramic moonroof, head-up Active Driving Display, and the comprehensive i-Activsense suite that includes Emergency Lane Keeping with Blind Spot Assist, Head-on Traffic Avoidance Assist, and driver monitoring. The flagship 3.3 Turbo S Premium Plus at $57,970 is a seven-passenger configuration only, with second-row captain’s chairs, second-row ventilation, optional Japanese Premium Nappa leather with Maple Wood trim, and front and rear interior foot lighting.

PHEV trims span three models. The PHEV Preferred opens at $50,695 with a 12.3-inch display, 21-inch wheels, ventilated front seats, heated first- and second-row seating, and front and rear parking sensors. The PHEV Premium Sport at $55,500 adds the blackout exterior package, Bose audio, Mazda Online Navigation, a head-up display, HomeLink, SiriusXM, and a 1,500-watt cargo-area outlet, along with Alexa Built-In newly standard for 2027 and an expanded i-Activsense suite covering Emergency Lane Keeping, Road Keep Assist, Cruising & Traffic Support, and Traffic Sign Recognition. The PHEV Premium Plus at $58,700 tops the range with Signature adaptive headlights, the Driver Personalization System with power tilt-and-telescope steering column and mirror memory, Nappa leather, second-row heating, and Smart Brake Support Turn-Across Traffic with pedestrian detection on the rear system. All prices exclude a $1,645 destination and handling charge ($1,690 in Alaska).

The CX-90 carries an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award, extending a record Mazda has built methodically across its lineup. The CX-5 gave Mazda its 100th IIHS Top Safety Pick award earlier this year, and the brand took five Newsweek Readers’ Choice Awards in 2026, including Best SUV Brand. Safety credibility has become a consistent part of how Mazda positions its vehicles, and the CX-90’s standard ten-airbag count and full i-Activsense suite across every trim fit that pattern.

The starting MSRP of $39,700 sits below the 2026 model’s $40,330 base, giving Mazda a marginally sharper entry point while expanding what the lineup covers. The 2027 CX-5 that Mazda priced yesterday at $29,990 handles the compact slot; the CX-90 now handles both the two- and three-row midsize roles. Ford Explorer ST and Dodge Durango GT bracket the CX-90 competitively, but neither offers a plug-in hybrid variant approaching 323 hp with 27 miles of electric range at this price point.

Mazda took a straightforward bet with the 2027 CX-90: one nameplate, two row counts, three powertrains, and a sharper price to open the conversation. Whether the math works depends on how many CX-70 buyers follow the badge change without noticing it.
