Ram is giving Power Wagon buyers an engine they have been asking about for years. For 2027, the Ram 2500 Power Wagon is available with the 6.7-liter Cummins High-Output turbo diesel inline-six for the first time, pairing the off-roader’s disconnecting sway bars, Warn winch, and locking axles with 430 hp and 1,075 lb-ft of torque through a TorqueFlite HD eight-speed automatic. That is the same Cummins HO figure that allows the Ram 2500 diesel to tow up to 20,000 lbs. and the Ram 3500 diesel to reach 37,020 lbs. on a fifth-wheel. The Power Wagon’s off-road hardware and that torque number were never meant for each other on paper; Ram has finally decided to find out what happens when they meet.
The 6.4-liter HEMI V8 Power Wagon is not left idle, either. Ram reintroduces an optional beadlock-capable wheel for the HEMI model, a detail serious off-roaders will notice immediately. The HEMI produces 410 hp and 429 lb-ft, and now all heavy-duty trucks wearing the 6.4-liter get a new Symbol of Protest V8 fender badge. Tradesman, Black Express, Warlock, Rebel, Power Wagon, and Night Edition trucks receive that badge in Satin Black.
Beyond the Power Wagon news, the more broadly significant update may be the new Payload Upgrade Package. Available on most Ram 2500 trucks equipped with the 6.4-liter HEMI V8 across Tradesman, Big Horn/Lone Star, Laramie, Limited, and Limited Longhorn trims, the $835 package raises GVWR from 10,000 lbs. to 11,040 lbs. and delivers a claimed best-in-class 2500 payload of 4,580 lbs. The package accomplishes that by fitting Ram 3500 frame components, leaf springs, and an anti-spin rear differential under a 2500 body. For buyers who need to carry heavy loads but want the lighter registration weight, the package offers a practical answer at a modest price.
Ram also pushed the Ram 3500 4×4 SRW Regular Cab with an 8-foot box and Crew Cab with a 6-foot, 4-inch box harder on the GVWR front. Both gain 400 lbs. over their 2026 figures, rising to a maximum 11,440 lbs. GVWR, which also grows maximum payload accordingly. Ram 3500 HEMI V8 towing reaches up to 18,140 lbs., with payload up to 7,580 lbs.
The fleet-specific news is an all-new model: the Ram 2500 Emergency Response Vehicle. Ram describes it as the brand’s first pursuit-capable three-quarter-ton truck, available to fleet customers. No further specifications on the ERV’s pursuit hardware were disclosed ahead of the August on-sale date.
Several equipment changes simplify the ordering process. The Sport Appearance Package and Night Edition Package now apply to trucks with Level 1 and Level 2 equipment groups rather than requiring the Plus upgrades, expanding their reach. The sport performance hood, previously an off-road package add-on, is now a standalone option on Rebel and Power Wagon and on Big Horn models equipped with the Night Edition or Sport Appearance package. The Warn electric winch also drops its Level 1 Equipment Group requirement on Rebel and Power Wagon HEMI V8 trucks, becoming a standalone option. Anti-spin rear differential follows the same path on 2500 Tradesman, now available without the Level 1 group. Laramie models gain expanded RamBox availability and new optional body-color fender flares. New colors for 2027 are Serrano Green Metallic and Tank Clear-Coat, both arriving at late availability.
Ram delivered 371,213 units in 2025, with heavy-duty sales running nearly 9 percent ahead year-to-date through mid-2026. Ford’s Super Duty diesel produces up to 500 hp and 1,200 lb-ft of torque from its 6.7-liter turbo diesel V-8, which still leads the Cummins HO on both peak power numbers. Ram’s counter has always been the 2500’s five-link coil rear suspension and the depth of off-road variants from Warlock through Power Wagon. Adding Cummins HO to that last model gives the lineup’s most recognizable nameplate its most capable powertrain. The 2027 Ram Heavy Duty goes on sale this August.
