Most Formula 1 teams build their driver seats from carbon fiber. Cadillac’s F1 team does not. The seat in Valtteri Bottas’s car is made from a natural flax-based fiber weave, a material choice that says something both about the team’s sustainability priorities and about the specific problem a driver seat has to solve.
That problem is vibration. A Formula 1 car transmits enormous amounts of it through the chassis, and carbon fiber, for all its structural advantages, transmits vibration efficiently too. Flax fiber absorbs it better, which means the driver arrives at the end of a race distance in somewhat better condition than they would have otherwise. At 60-plus laps of sustained G-force loading, the difference matters.
The process of building one starts with a mold. The driver sits inside the car’s chassis on top of a plastic bag, and a technician pours in a liquid compound that cures into rigid foam around the body. That foam shape is then digitally scanned and modeled with precision, creating the template from which the actual seat is fabricated. GM coordinates the overall process from its Charlotte Technical Center. The seat itself is built at the team’s U.K. facility outside the Silverstone Circuit, where the composite layup work happens.
After the seat is complete, it goes through a test fit with the driver before it ever sees a race weekend. In the case documented here, Bottas sat in the new seat at the British Grand Prix garage and gave the team specific feedback on fit, with the seat traveling back to the factory afterward for adjustments, material added or removed where the driver indicated. Only after that second iteration did Bottas run the seat in Free Practice 1.
The attention to fit isn’t fastidiousness for its own sake. A seat that allows even small amounts of movement under lateral G-force compounds driver fatigue over a race distance. One that fits too tightly creates a different kind of discomfort. The tolerance window is narrow, and the consequences of getting it wrong show up in lap times late in the race when the driver is already managing physical stress.
Cadillac’s approach to bespoke construction isn’t confined to the race program. The Curated ESCALADE IQ program brings similarly precise hand-built craft to its electric flagship, and the V-ONE concept carried a bespoke interior alongside its LMDh-derived powertrain. Even the CT5-V Blackwing F1 Collector Series, 26 units built with the race program’s branding, leaned into the idea that what happens on track should mean something in the showroom. The seat process is a quieter version of the same argument: that specificity, not generality, is what the brand is selling.
The flax weave won’t make headlines the way a lap time does. But it’s the kind of detail that tends to matter more in a team’s second and third seasons, when fractions accumulate and driver condition in the closing laps starts to show up in the standings.
