Ford Performance achieved a historic double victory at the 2024 SCORE Baja 1000, conquering the unforgiving desert terrain with wins in two distinct classes. The Bronco DR triumphed in the Heavy Metal Limited class, while the Ranger Raptor claimed the top spot in the Stock Mid-Size class, showcasing Ford’s engineering excellence on the world’s toughest off-road stage.
The legendary Baja 1000, spanning over 800 miles of rugged terrain in Baja California, Mexico, is a grueling test for both vehicles and drivers. This year’s course featured rain, snow, silt beds, jagged rocks, and unpredictable darkness. For Ford, the race wasn’t just about competing—it was about proving the durability and capability of their off-road machines.
Bronco DR: Continuing a Legacy –
The Bronco DR (Desert Racer) upheld its Baja heritage, adding another victory to its storied history. This purpose-built machine was engineered specifically for the rigors of desert racing, and it has proven its mettle in every competition it entered this year.
A skilled team of drivers, including Brad Lovell, Jason Hutter, and Jason Scherer, tackled the treacherous terrain in the Bronco DR, piloting it to an emphatic finish. Brad Lovell, a veteran of Baja racing, highlighted the significance of the win:
“The Baja 1000 is the toughest race in North America, and it’s an honor to contribute to Bronco’s legacy in this iconic event.”
The Bronco DR’s advanced suspension, robust chassis, and race-proven 5.0L V8 engine were instrumental in its success. The vehicle was designed to endure extreme environments and proved its reliability and performance again.
Ranger Raptor: From Showroom to Podium –
In the Stock Mid-Size class, the Ford Ranger Raptor demonstrated that a production-based truck could excel in the harshest conditions. Powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.0L EcoBoost V6 engine and equipped with FOX™ suspension and advanced off-road technologies, the Ranger Raptor navigated the 736-mile course with precision and power.
The driving duties were split among a trio of teams, including off-road experts Loren Healy and Bailey Campbell. Despite challenges, the Ranger Raptor’s durability and capability stood out.
“Baja is relentless,” said Loren Healy. “But the Ranger Raptor proved it’s built to handle anything this desert throws at it.”
Engineering Excellence in the Wild –
Both vehicles benefited from Ford’s cutting-edge technology and rigorous development process. The Ranger Raptor was outfitted with a MoTeC data acquisition system, allowing engineers to collect real-time performance data throughout the race. These insights will drive improvements for future production vehicles, ensuring that Ford’s consumer trucks benefit from their off-road racing success.
A Testament to Ford Performance –
The 2024 Baja 1000 reinforced Ford’s commitment to innovation and endurance. By earning two-class victories, the Bronco DR and Ranger Raptor have set new benchmarks for off-road capability and durability.
Mark Rushbrook, Global Director of Ford Performance Motorsports, summed it up:
“This race isn’t just about finishing—it’s about proving our vehicles can conquer the toughest challenges in the world.”
Ford’s dual-class win at the Baja 1000 is a testament to the strength of their off-road engineering and the relentless drive of their teams.
