Ford Motor Company (Ford) has issued a recall for 808 of its 2023-2024 Transit vans due to a potentially hazardous rear axle issue. The recall involves vehicles previously serviced under recall number 24V-102. Incorrect bolts may have been used to attach the rear axle shaft, which could result in the rear wheel locking up or detaching from the axle.
Safety Risk –
The incorrect bolts may lead to serious safety concerns. If the rear wheel locks up or separates from the axle shaft, it could cause a loss of vehicle control or drive power. Additionally, if the vehicle is parked without the parking brake engaged, it may roll away. These issues significantly increase the risk of a crash or injury.
Recall Remedy –
Ford will remedy the issue at no cost to owners. Dealers will inspect the rear axle shaft bolts and replace any incorrect bolts as needed. They will also fill the differential fluid if necessary. Ford plans to mail notification letters to affected owners starting December 9, 2024. Owners can contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 and reference the recall number 24S67 for more information.
Additional Information –
Owners can also get assistance by contacting the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or by visiting nhtsa.gov.
Details of the Issue –
Root Cause: The rear axle shaft bolt part numbers provided in Supplement 2 of the Dealer Bulletin for Ford Safety Recall 24S05 were mistakenly swapped for Single Rear Wheel (SRW) and Dual Rear Wheel (DRW) Transit vans. This error may have led to inadequate bolt engagement, causing the safety risk.
Warning Signs: Drivers may notice warning signs such as rear axle fluid leaks, grinding noises, or increased vibration while driving.
Production Information –
The affected Ford Transit vans were manufactured without following a specific VIN order. The recall affects 731 vans from the 2023 model year and 77 vans from the 2024 model year. Ford encourages vehicle owners to check with their local Ford or Lincoln dealer or use the Ford On-line Automotive Service Information System (OASIS) to confirm whether their van is included in the recall.
Dealer Action –
Dealers are required to submit recall repair claims to Ford within 30 days for reimbursement. The total number of vehicles affected may be adjusted as recall repairs are processed and documented. Ford will provide an update to the defect report if the number of affected vehicles changes.
Ford advises owners to take action promptly to ensure their Transit van is safe and compliant with vehicle safety standards.
