Tesla is recalling 2,431 units of its 2024 Cybertruck due to a fault in the drive inverter that may lead to a loss of drive power. This recall affects certain vehicles manufactured between November 6, 2023, and July 30, 2024. Affected vehicles contain a metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET) part in the drive inverter that could stop producing torque, causing the loss of propulsion when the driver attempts to accelerate.
If the fault occurs, the vehicle will lose the ability to apply torque using the accelerator pedal, which could increase the risk of a collision. Tesla has stated that no warning is given before the loss of power, but the vehicle’s interface will display an alert instructing the driver to pull over safely.
To address this issue, Tesla will replace the faulty inverters free of charge. The owner notification letters are expected to be sent out on January 4, 2025. Tesla has identified five warranty claims related to the condition, but they are not aware of any accidents or injuries associated with this defect.
The recall affects only Cybertruck vehicles equipped with drive inverters that contain MOSFET components part number 1530063-2A-B. Starting on or after December 9, 2024, Tesla will replace the faulty inverters with updated ones containing properly functioning MOSFET components.
Recall Chronology –
- August 5, 2024: Tesla began investigating a customer complaint of a sudden loss of propulsion in a 2024 Cybertruck, which occurred on July 31, 2024.
- August 5 – October 23, 2024: Tesla conducted an investigation and analyzed field data to understand the issue better and identify potentially affected vehicles.
- October 23, 2024: Tesla identified an increased failure rate in drive inverters equipped with MOSFET components in certain vehicles.
- October 30, 2024: Tesla completed its assessment and determined that a voluntary recall was necessary for the affected vehicles.
- October 30, 2024: Tesla identified 5 warranty claims potentially related to the fault, though no accidents, fatalities, or injuries have been reported in connection with the issue.
- December 9, 2024 (or later): Tesla will begin replacing the recalled drive inverters with updated versions containing properly functioning MOSFET components, free of charge to customers.
