The 2027 Toyota GR86 arrives this summer with a set of focused updates aimed at sharpening throttle response, improving shift feel, and expanding active safety coverage. Toyota has not touched the 228-hp naturally aspirated boxer four, which means this is a refinement year rather than a generational leap.
The updates start with revised throttle calibration for smoother, more linear torque delivery. Engineers also widened the shifter interlock between fourth and fifth gear by roughly 0.02 inches to smooth out downshifts during spirited driving. The stereo camera’s recognition range has nearly doubled to improve adaptive cruise control detection, and a new monocular camera was added to help spot objects at intersections. These are the substantive changes. Everything else is cosmetic or convenience-focused.
The new Thunder exterior color is a solid gray that shifts in different light. Toyota pairs it with a new Cockpit Red interior option on Premium grades, which adds black Ultrasuede and red leather accents on the side bolsters, red floor mats, and red door trim. The all-black interior remains available. Premium models also receive a cast iron black finish on switches, knobs, and the shifter.

The Performance Package returns for 2027, available on both base and Premium grades. It bundles Brembo four-piston front and two-piston rear brake calipers with 12.8-inch front rotors and 12.4-inch rears, along with SACHS dampers filled with high-pressure nitrogen and oil. The dampers are designed to absorb vibrations across a wide speed range while balancing road feedback and ride comfort. The package complements the GR86’s existing chassis, which uses a combination of high-strength steel, hot-stamped steel, and aluminum strategically placed to balance roll and pitch.
The powertrain is unchanged. The naturally aspirated 2.4-liter FA-24 boxer four makes 228 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque, with peak torque arriving at 3,700 rpm. Zero-to-60 comes in at 6.1 seconds with the six-speed manual and 6.6 seconds with the six-speed automatic. Both transmissions come standard with a Torsen limited-slip rear differential. Weight holds at 2,811 pounds for the manual-equipped base model and 2,851 pounds for the automatic.

Toyota sold 11,426 GR86 units in 2024, up from 11,078 in 2023. Manual transmission take rate was 53 percent in 2024, with 6,056 buyers choosing the six-speed stick and 5,370 opting for the automatic. The GR86 is the second-cheapest sports car on sale in the US, behind only the Mazda Miata. The 2027 Subaru BRZ, which shares its platform and powertrain with the GR86, will start at $37,385 including destination fees, a $280 increase over the 2026 model. Toyota has not yet disclosed pricing for the 2027 GR86, though it should land in the same ballpark given the modest scope of the updates.
The GR86’s appeal has always been its lightweight, rear-wheel-drive purity in a market where affordable sports cars are increasingly rare. An aluminum hood, front fenders, and roof panel help keep body weight down. Structural adhesives in the frame and seats that are more than six pounds lighter than the previous-generation 86 save additional mass. The result is a car that prioritizes balance and control over outright power.

Inside, the driver-focused cockpit includes a digital instrument panel, push-button start, HVAC system with LED dials and piano-key switches, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with integrated audio controls. The automatic transmission gets steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters and three drive modes: Normal, Sport, and Snow. In Sport mode, the transmission senses brake and accelerator operation to automatically select the optimal gear.
Active safety equipment is standard across the lineup. The suite includes Pre-Collision Braking System, Pre-Collision Throttle Management, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lead Vehicle Start Alert, Lane Departure Alert with Sway Warning, and Automatic High Beams. Premium grades add Rear Sonar Warning to help detect objects during low-speed reverse driving. An anti-theft system with engine immobilizer and alarm is standard. Toyota’s Star Safety System includes Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, Anti-lock Brake System, Electronic Brake-Force Distribution, Brake Assist, Smart Stop Technology, Track Mode, and Hill Start Assist Control.
The 2027 GR86 is expected to arrive at Toyota dealerships in summer 2026. Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Pricing and full specifications will be disclosed later this year. If you have been holding out for a significant power bump or platform change, this is not that year. If you want the current GR86 with slightly better throttle response and a red interior, summer 2026 is your window.
