2027 Ram ProMaster City Returns to Market at $37,400, Sole Midsize Commercial Van in the U.S.

Ram just filled a gap that has been empty for five years. The 2027 ProMaster City arrives in the first quarter of next year as the lone midsize commercial van in the United States, with pricing that starts at $37,400 before a $2,595 destination charge, or $39,995 all-in. Every competitor that once crowded this segment, the Chevrolet City Express, Nissan NV200, Mercedes Metris, and Ford Transit Connect, is already gone. The previous-generation ProMaster City was the last to exit, in 2022. Ram is the only brand that saw fit to come back.

That positioning matters when you read the pricing. At $39,995 including destination, the ProMaster City undercuts the Ford Transit by roughly $11,000 and costs nearly $9,000 less than the entry-level Ram ProMaster 1500 Tradesman Cargo. Businesses that need a van but can’t justify full-size footprint or full-size cost now have one option, and Ram knows it.

Four Configurations, Four Price Points

The lineup spans two trims and two body styles. The Tradesman Cargo starts at $37,400 plus destination; the SLT Cargo at $38,900. Passenger Wagon versions run higher: the Tradesman Wagon at $40,100 and the SLT Wagon at $41,600, both before the $2,595 destination charge. The Passenger Wagon adds seating for five as standard equipment, with an optional third row that pushes capacity to eight.

Standard equipment is more substantial than the price tag suggests. Every ProMaster City arrives with a 10-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10-inch touchscreen carrying navigation, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, a 5-inch digital rearview mirror, heated front seats, an electronic shifter, and one-touch express windows. The SLT adds front parking sensors, a wireless phone charger, a heated steering wheel, fog lamps, body-color bumpers, and 17-inch dual-tone aluminum wheels. For a commercial van, that’s a reasonably appointed cabin.

Powertrain and Capability

Under the hood sits a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder producing 166 hp and 221 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic sending power to the front wheels. Front-wheel drive in a cargo van isn’t a compromise so much as a deliberate packaging choice: moving the drivetrain forward frees up the load floor behind it. Ram targets 2,000 lbs. of payload and up to 2,000 lbs. of towing with an available Class 3 trailer hitch. Neither number breaks records in the commercial segment, but both cover the daily workloads most small-business buyers actually face.

The cargo area measures more than 167 cubic feet of total capacity with a 111-inch load floor and 54 inches of cargo height, and spans more than 48 inches between the rear wheel wells. That’s enough room for a standard 4-by-8-foot sheet of construction material laid flat. Buyers can choose from 11 distinct window and panel configurations across six combinations, with either rear swing doors or a segment-exclusive rear liftgate. Ram also packaged virtually all primary vehicle systems forward of the cargo box, leaving the rear area open for trade-specific upfits without working around underbody intrusions.

Height is the other practical number. At under 80 inches tall, the ProMaster City clears standard parking garage structures that defeat full-size vans. Ram calls it the only Class 2 commercial van that fits in most urban garages, and there’s no competing claim to dispute at the moment given the segment’s current population of one.

Safety and Driver Technology

Standard safety equipment across all configurations includes forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, Driver Attention Alert, automatic LED headlamps with auto high beams, a ParkView rear backup camera, ParkSense rear parking sensors, hill-start assist, an exterior temperature and ice warning display, and a programmable speed limiter. The Passenger Wagon adds second- and third-row side-curtain airbags. These systems arriving as standard equipment on the base Tradesman Cargo rather than as an options package represents a meaningful step up from where commercial vans typically land at this price.

Timing and Market Position

Production starts in 2026 with dealer deliveries in the first quarter of 2027. The van sits on a Stellantis commercial vehicle platform with more than 1.5 million units sold globally and billions of miles of accumulated use, though the 2027 ProMaster City has been specifically re-engineered and validated for the North American market rather than arriving as a direct carry-over.

Ram CEO Matt VanDyke leaned hard on the sub-$40,000 commitment when the van was unveiled earlier this year, and the delivered price of $39,995 holds that line by $5. For fleet buyers who compare acquisition costs line by line across a purchase order, that number will look intentional, because it is.

Five brands tried and walked away from this segment. Ram is back, alone, with a price that dares anyone else to follow.
