Ram Recalls Two For 2021 ProMasters For ESC Issue

Simple Loose Ground Needs To Be Tightened...

Stellantis (FCA US) has initiated a recall for two 2021 Ram ProMaster vans due to an insecure ground connection that may cause the electric stability control (ESC) to become inoperative. As such, these vans fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 126, “Electronic Stability Control Systems.”

These vans may have a loose ground securement for the anti-lock brake system (ABS) module, which may result in the loss of communication with the ABS module, leading to a loss of ESC. A vehicle with a non-functioning ESC system may increase the risk of a crash during certain conditions.

The suspect population began on August 14, 2021, when the first suspect vehicle was produced, and ended on October 18, 2021, when the last suspect vehicle was made. Warranty repair records were used to determine the suspect period.

Similar vehicles not included in this recall were built with proper ground securement.

Recall Chronology:

  • On January 23, 2023, FCA US LLC (“FCA US”) Technical Safety and Regulatory Compliance (“TSRC”) organization was notified of a potential issue related to an inoperative ABS module in some 2021 MY Ram ProMaster vehicles.
  • From January 2023 through July 2023, FCA US TSRC reviewed warranty data, field records, and customer assistance records to understand potential customer consequences.
  • From July 2023 through March 2024, FCA US TSRC met with FCA US engineering and manufacturing to review the issue, understand the failure mode, and determine the suspect population.
  • On March 27, 2024, the FCA US TSRC organization recognized a vehicle build issue on certain vehicles that could lead to a loose ABS module ground connection, which could lead to a loss of ESC function, potentially resulting in noncompliance with FMVSS No. 126.
