The Chevrolet Silverado EV is set to enhance its driving capabilities with the introduction of the new Sidewinder feature, offering drivers a unique way to maneuver their trucks. This feature, which operates similarly to the CrabWalk mode found in its GMC Sierra EV counterpart, allows the Silverado EV to navigate in a diagonal direction, increasing agility and ease of handling in tight spaces.
What is the Sidewinder Feature? –
The Sidewinder mode utilizes the Silverado EV’s rear-wheel steering system, enabling all four wheels to turn in the same direction. This functionality allows for diagonal driving at speeds of up to 20 mph, making it particularly useful for navigating through crowded areas or parking lots. Drivers can easily activate Sidewinder mode through the Rear Steering page located in the vehicle’s infotainment display. When engaged, the system displays graphics and a confirmation message on the instrument cluster, providing clear feedback that the mode is active.
Availability and Updates –
The Sidewinder feature will be standard on the 2025 Chevrolet Silverado EV RST model. In addition, it will be made available for the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV RST First Edition models through an over-the-air software update. This update will reach both the trucks still on dealer lots and those already owned by customers, ensuring that a wide range of Silverado EV owners can benefit from this new capability.
Comparing Sidewinder and CrabWalk –
The CrabWalk feature first gained attention with the GMC Hummer EV and is standard on the 2024 GMC Sierra EV Denali Edition 1. While both the CrabWalk and Sidewinder modes provide similar diagonal driving capabilities, Chevy has chosen a distinct branding for its version. Additionally, the feature will also be available in the upcoming 2025 Cadillac Escalade IQ SUV, where it will be referred to as Cadillac Arrival Mode, further expanding the application of this innovative driving technology across General Motors’ lineup.
Other Enhancements for 2025 –
In addition to the Sidewinder feature, the 2025 Chevrolet Silverado EV will see improvements in range. The RST model will achieve an impressive range of up to 460 miles, while the base WT model will reach up to 492 miles with the larger Max Range battery pack. A new LT grade will also be introduced, slotting in between the existing models to offer more options for customers.
The addition of the Sidewinder feature and the improvements to the Silverado EV lineup reflect Chevrolet’s commitment to enhancing the functionality and performance of its electric trucks. With innovative features and impressive range capabilities, the Silverado EV continues to position itself as a competitive player in the growing electric vehicle market.
