General Motors Recalls 2024 EV Models Over Drive Unit Issue

Only Ten Vehicles Are Affected...

2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV RS. (Chevrolet).

General Motors (GM) is recalling approximately ten units of its 2024 electric vehicle (EV) models, including the Cadillac Lyriq, Chevrolet Blazer EV, Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Hummer EV SUV, and GMC Sierra EV. The recall is due to a potential issue with the electric motors in the rear drive units, where insufficiently insulated wires may come into contact, leading to a loss of drive power.

Recall Details and Chronology –

2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV RST. (Chevrolet).

The issue was first identified on April 11, 2024, when a GM quality engineer reported the problem through GM’s Speak Up For Safety (SUFS) program. The issue arose after GM’s supplier of drive unit stator assemblies found that a line operator had failed to apply an insulating “varnish” to some assemblies. These faulty assemblies could potentially have been used in ten vehicles sold in the United States.

GM promptly opened a product investigation on April 16, 2024. The investigation revealed that the lack of insulating varnish could result in wire-to-wire contact within the drive unit stator, potentially causing the vehicle to lose propulsion without warning. Following this discovery, GM’s Safety Field Action Decision Authority (SFADA) decided to initiate a safety recall on May 2, 2024. GM has stated that no field incidents related to this defect have been reported.
